Press release, May 2024

Winter 2024

As a participant in the Sir Elton John Global Exchange Program, I spent a week immersed in activities at the Royal Academy of Music in London, England. Highlights of the week included coachings by James Baillieu, Christopher Elton, Mark Padmore, and the Barbican Quartet. I also had several opportunities to play in student Chamber Music Ensembles, and to attend concerts at Wigmore Hall and other London Landmarks.  Thank you to Sir Elton John, the Royal Academy of Music, and the Glenn Gould School for making all of this possible!

Fall 2023

Continuing in my second year of the Bachelor of Music program in piano performance, at the Glenn Gould School in Toronto. Good news: I am extremely grateful to have been awarded the Ihnatowycz Prize in Piano, a scholarship that covers tuition and living expenses for the duration of the Bachelor program!

A musical highlight was playing Brahms Piano Concerto No.1 with the Royal Conservatory Orchestra, JoAnn Falletta conducting, in Koerner Hall, Toronto, November 24.

Summer 2023

Clara Haskil International Piano Competition  (August 22-September 2, 2023) This was a wonderful experience in the beautiful Swiss town of Vevey, on the shores of Lake Geneva. Many thanks to my hosts who cooked amazing meals, chauffeured me to and from the competition venue, and gave me unlimited access to their grand piano and beautiful home and garden!

Verbier Festival Academy (July 9-31, 2023) This was a thoughoughly inspiring program of Masterclasses and Chamber Music in the idyllic apline town of Verbier in Switzerland. Faculty with whom I studied included Klaus Hellwig, Rena Shereshevskaya, I Giardini, Richard Goode, Gábor Takács-Nagy, and Kirill Gerstein. Thanks to academy organizers and my host for an unforgettable experience!

Orford Musique (July 2-8, 2023) As always, it was great to be at Orford, Quebec with so much focused musical activity and fresh air! I enjoyed lessons with Sara Davis Buechner and Ronan O’Hora.

Spring 2023

I was happily a member of piano trios that received 1st and 2nd prize at the Glenn Gould School Chamber Music Competition (March 27-29, 2023). The finals took place in Koerner Hall, Toronto.

Fall 2022

A busy time full of change: moving from Bellingham, WA to Toronto to begin studies at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music. Good news: I am delighted to be the recipient of this year’s Ron Bresler and Erin Donahue tuition scholarship!

September 10, 2022: Winner of a Davidson Fellows Scholarship for a portfolio of my recent compositions. The awards ceremony, at MIT in Boston, was an exciting event, attended by fellows who had completed major projects in Science, Literature, Engineering, Mathematics, and Music. Inspiring!

Summer 2022

Orford Musique (Orford, Quebec July 30-August 13, 2022) I attended in-person this year and had some very enjoyable and inspiring lessons with Sara Davis Buechner. I also got to hike La Boucle des trois étangs, a beautiful trail in the Parc National du Mont-Orford adjacent to Orford Musique. I took part in the Prix Orford Musique competition and was very honored to receive Orford’s grand prize and People’s Choice Award.

Winter 2022

Fall 2021

Summer 2021

Verbier Festival (July 2-31, 2021) I had a wonderful time at this music festival in the beautiful town of Verbier in the Swiss Alps. Highlights of the 3-week long festival included piano lessons with Joaquín Achúcarro, Klaus Hellwig, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, and Sir András Schiff. I was honoured to be a co-winner of the festival’s Tabor Prize for Piano. Click here to see other participating students;

Orford Musique (Orford, Quebec, summer 2021) Online studies with Anton Nel, Jean Saulnier, and Evelyne Brancart were terrific. I am hoping to attend in-person next summer!

Good news at the end of Summer 2021! I received two 2021 SOCAN Foundation Young Composer Awards. One was in the Large Ensemble Category for my piece Petawawa Gorges, and the other was in the Solo Category for my piece Chorale and Variations. Scores for these are available by searching for my name on the Canadian Music Centre’s website.

My solo piano composition, Etude on Home Sweet Home, won the grand prize ($25,000) in the Domicile Adoré Competition run by Jeunesse Musicales Canada. Participants in this competition were asked to compose a piece based on a 6-note theme from “Home Sweet home”. In writing this piece, I aimed to convey not only the feelings of isolation and unrest, but also the comforts of staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here is my recording of the piece, and sheet music is available by searching for my name on the Canadian Music Centre’s website.

May 2021 Bellingham Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, 1st Prize. Unfortunately the performance with the Orchestra had to be canceled because of COVID.

Prior to 2021

Verbier Festival 2020 (July 2020, Switzerland) I was accepted into Verbier 2020 to study with piano mentors Richard Goode, Sergei Babayan, Stephan Kovacevich, and András Schiff. The academy had to be canceled for this summer because of COVID, but the good news is that acceptances will be rolled over to the summer of 2021!

Art of the Piano 2020 (Summer 2020, Cincinnati) This is a piano institute that is presented annually by Awadagin Pratt and many other fine faculty teachers. I was one of several students accepted into the academy this year: Young Artists 2020 . The in-person part of the academy was canceled this year due to COVID; however, the institute presented an on-line concert series featuring live concerts by faculty and student participants. The series ran June 23-July 6. Faculty concerts featured pianists including Garrick Ohlsson, Alexander Korsantia, Victor Rosenbaum, Simone Dinnerstein, Enrico Elisi, Boris Slutsky, Marina Lomazov, John Perry, Jim Giles, William Nabore, Vladimir  Feltsman, Jeffrey Kahane, and Olga Kern. Student concerts happened Fridays at 8pm.

Domaine Forget 2020 (Charlevoix, Quebec) I was accepted for online studies with Alessio Bax and Ilya Poletaev. Unfortunately the academy was canceled due to COVID.

Orford Musique 2020 (Orford, Quebec) This is summer-long academy in the beautiful Mont Orford National Park has been called “a Jewel in the Crown of Canadian Culture” and features many concerts for the general public. Unfortunately the in-person version of the academy had to be canceled this summer due to COVID. However an online version was quickly organized and I was able to study remotely with Sara Davis Buechner and Jimmy Brière. (August 2-15 and July 26-August 1).

My composition for full orchestra, Petawawa Gorges, received two exciting awards in 2020:
 (i) It was awarded an honorable mention in the 68th annual BMI Young Composer Competition and
(ii) It was chosen for performance by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in the 2020 Jean Coulthard Readings.

My composition Isle of Pic won the 2020 Canadian Music Centre’s Emerging Composer Competition and was premiered by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra at the Winnipeg New Music Festival in January 2020.

I received first Prize, 17 and under category, in the 2018 Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal Manulife competition. I played the Ravel Piano concerto in G major at the finals.
